Packing for Egypt is not complicated — but a little planning makes a big difference. Here is the complete Egypt packing list, from more than 28 years of guiding travellers across the country.

The essentials

  • Comfortable walking shoes — you will walk on sand, rocks and uneven ground.
  • Light, breathable clothing — linen and cotton are ideal.
  • Hat or cap + sunglasses — the Egyptian sun is strong.
  • High-factor sunscreen — and reapply often.
  • Reusable water bottle — buy bottled water regularly.
  • Small day bag for sites and day trips.
  • Power bank + universal adapter (Egypt uses type C/F, 220V).
  • Personal medication and a small first-aid kit.

What to wear in Egypt

Dress for the heat but keep it modest, especially at mosques — cover shoulders and knees. Light colours look great in photos and stay cooler. A light scarf is handy for women at religious sites.

For cooler months (Nov–Feb)

Bring a jacket or fleece for cold mornings and evenings, especially on the Nile and for an early Abu Simbel drive.

For desert trips

Closed shoes, extra sun protection and a warm layer for cool desert nights.

For a Nile cruise

Smart-casual clothes for dinner, swimwear for the pool deck, and a light layer for dawn on deck. See our Nile cruise guide.

For photography

Bring the camera you enjoy using — you do not need pro gear for beautiful photos. Check each site’s photography rules and any camera fees.

What NOT to pack

  • Overly revealing clothing (respectful dress is expected).
  • Heavy woolens beyond a light jacket.
  • Too much — laundry is cheap and widely available.

Health & water

Drink bottled or filtered water only. Pack rehydration salts and any prescription medication. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Our tip

Pack for the experience, not just the destination — Egypt means walking, sunshine, boats, ancient stones and a little dust!
